Spain: Ibiza’s governing body has removed over 2,800 illegal short-term rental listings from Airbnb as part of a crackdown on unlicensed accommodation across the island.

The action, carried out between July 2024 and September 2025 by Ibiza’s Illegal Short-Term Rentals Taskforce in collaboration with travel data company Mabrian, resulted in 2,831 listings and more than 14,500 beds being taken down from the platform.

The initiative forms part of the island’s wider strategy to tackle overtourism and strengthen the legal accommodation supply. According to Ibiza government president Vicent Marí, the campaign has made Ibiza “the first destination in Spain to have fully removed illegal short-term rental listings from the Airbnb platform”.

Mabrian supported the taskforce by developing a data intelligence system that identifies non-compliant properties and enables faster removal. Listings removed included campervans, caravans, tents and cabins on unauthorised sites, as well as properties operating without valid licence numbers.

Balearic Islands president Marga Prohens said the results would help extend similar actions across other islands in the region.

Despite the success of the clampdown, reports suggest some unlicensed rentals remain active on the platform, including vehicles and temporary structures listed as accommodation.

Back in March this year, Ibiza’s Island Council and Airbnb signed an agreement to crack down on illegal tourist accommodation listed on the platform.
