US: Expedia Group has undergone more restructuring by laying off an undisclosed number of staff in its marketing and creative teams, as per posts appearing on LinkedIn.

In a statement provided earlier to GeekWire, the company said: “To ensure the best traveller experience, we must continually adapt to the evolving needs of our industry and travellers. This requires difficult but necessary decisions such as refining our marketing strategies, improving efficiencies, and reallocating resources to areas with the greatest business impact to drive customer engagement.”

According to its annual 10-K filing, Expedia Group had 16,500 employees in almost 50 countries as of 31 December 2024, compared to around 17,000 a year earlier.

In its recent Q4 earnings report, the group reported a ten per cent YoY [year-on-year] increase in revenue to $3.1 billion.

At the time, Expedia Group CEO Ariane Gorin said: “We were disciplined in our cost management in 2024, and that allowed us to expand profit margins while reinvesting in strategic areas. We believe we still have room to deliver further efficiencies across our variable costs and fixed cost base to expand our margins even further.”

A year ago, Expedia Group announced its last major round of job cuts, affecting around 1,500 jobs, in its product and technology division. The restructuring measure accounted for nine per cent of the company’s overall headcount.

Prior to that, it laid off staff in travel operations, support, IT, recruiting, marketing and B2B services in July 2023, and the Seattle-based company cut around 3,000 jobs just before the pandemic in February 2020, shortly after the resignation of former CEO Mark Okerstrom.

In recent months, Expedia Group enhanced its C-suite executive team with the appointment of Shilpa Ranganathan as chief product officer and Scott Schenkel as chief financial officer [CFO].

Expedia Group’s brands include Vrbo, Expedia, Trivago, Hotels.com, Orbitz and Hotwire.
