US: Jackson County in Missouri has passed a new ordinance that blocks plans to tax short-term rentals as commercial properties until at least 2027.
Signed by County Executive Frank White Jr., the new rule stops the county assessor from reclassifying STRs homes rented for fewer than 30 days and caps property tax increases at 15 per cent over the next two years.
White said the pause allows time to review the issue properly. “It’s important we take the time to get this right,” he said.
The move comes after concerns from local STR owners about rising tax bills and follows wider debate across the US over how STRs should be taxed and regulated.
County leaders are expected to share more information later this year, ahead of the next property assessment cycle in 2027.
The Missouri Vacation Home Alliance (MOVHA) is working at state level to clarify the tax code and ensure short-term and vacation rentals remain classed as residential properties.
