US: The vacation rental platform has introduced eight new search filters and launched an educational course to support hosts in making their properties more accessible.

Vrbo is working to create a more inclusive experience for travellers with disabilities through the expansion of its accessibility features and a new industry partnership.

Previously, travellers could only search for accessible features such as wheelchair or elevator access. Now, Vrbo has added eight additional filters, enabling users to find vacation rentals that are on a single level, stair-free, or include accessible parking, an accessible pool, handrails in stairways or hallways, an entrance map, an accessible path, or accessible van parking.

As part of its push for greater inclusion, Vrbo has partnered with Becoming rentABLE, a platform focused on improving accessibility in short-term rentals, to encourage hosts to make their properties more accessible.

Tim Rosolio, vice president of vacation rental partnerships at Vrbo, said: “Our mission is to power global travel for everyone, everywhere — and that includes travellers with disabilities, a growing yet wildly underserved market. Together with Becoming rentABLE, we’re hoping to educate hosts about the moral value, but also the business value, of making small changes that deliver big impacts for this audience.”

Vrbo has also launched a 10-minute online course, developed in collaboration with Becoming rentABLE, to support hosts in enhancing the accessibility of their listings. The course offers practical strategies — from inclusive design ideas to commonly overlooked features — and highlights the importance of providing accurate and detailed accessibility information, according to Becoming rentABLE.

Rosolio added: “Vrbo will track engagement, filter usage, and host upgrade metrics to guide future partnership opportunities and improve inclusivity for travellers with disabilities.”

Takeaways:

  • Vrbo’s accessibility upgrade aligns with growing consumer demand for inclusive travel — with disability-friendly travel searches on the rise, platforms prioritising accessibility are likely to stand out in a competitive short-term rental market.

  • Hosts who improve accessibility can unlock new revenue streams — as the accessible travel market grows, small property upgrades could significantly increase booking potential.

  • Partnerships like Vrbo x Becoming rentABLE highlight a wider industry shift — expect more short-term rental platforms to invest in inclusive design, transparent accessibility listings, and education for hosts in 2025 and beyond.
